San Marzano D.O.P. Tomatoes – Italy

San Marzano tomatoes are grown in the lava rich soil below Mount Vesuvius.  These unique tomatoes have the lowest water content and the fewest seeds.  San Marzano’s ripen to a rich red color evenly from top to bottom.  They are picked vine-ripened and bottled immediately.  Because of these qualities and their dark iron rich flavor they are considered to be the best tomato to cook with. 

 

San Marzano tomatoes are so delicious that a perfect sauce for pizza or pasta can be made by simply pureeing them and adding nothing but sea salt and pepper to taste.

 

There are many imitators on the market.  Often you will see “San Marzano” in quotation marks or “Roma Tomatoes from San Marzano.”  These are not authentic San Marzano tomatoes.  Italy is so proud of the real San Marzano tomato that it is certified DOP, Denomination of Protected Origin, by the European Union.

 

Our San Marzano is not only D.O.P., it is also USDA certified organic and it has the Slow Food seal of authenticity.
